Not exactly the typical conversation one has around the dinner table, but maybe…it should be.
At a seminar I recently attended, the speaker shared about a family who did just that. They went around the table, each sharing their mistakes and then getting a large round of applause afterwards.
Strange family, you might think. However, they aren’t applauding purposeful failure, they’re applauding the person’s attempt to try something new and out of his or her comfort zone.
Nowadays, people have the idea that they have to be perfect – to have the house clean and sparkly 24/7, to always look “put-together,” or to garner success with ease.
What kind of world would we live in if our attempts to try something new was celebrated even if most would categorize them as epic failures? What heights would we reach? How much braver would we be? How much more would we learn? And how much more would we be able to make a positive impact on the world?
So ask yourself, how did I fail today? Then give yourself a pat on the back.
PS: And if you have a hard time letting go of mistakes, don’t worry, we have advice on that too.
Life is not just about work, but work should be about life
In this monthly series, we’ll be exploring work/life balance and some hands-on ways to tackle it. Because let’s face it, life is always busy.
I’d Like to Hear from You
Whenever I publish something I always try to double check and make sure links, grammar, images, etc. are all correct. Inevitably, I always forget something. How fitting that I made a grammar mistake on the main image of this blog, when the topic is about failure. Thankfully, my husband was able to point it out to me kindly and I was able to fix it. Phew!
Asking ourselves “how did I fail today” sounds like an excellent practice to keep the fire burning in the entrepreneurial spirit in all of us. After all, what is failing except a discovery of something that doesn’t work as well as you need it to? Progress, and ultimately success, are built on that journey of tiny steps (sometimes along the intended path, sometimes just to the side to follow a new idea). There is meaning and mindfulness in recognizing these tiny forward and sideways steps along the way; it helps us see that we are making progress even when it feels like we aren’t. I needed this reminder today.
Nicely put! Thank you for sharing. Your comment would have fit beautifully into this blog ?
